Kinky Boots (film)

이미지 썸네일

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Kinky Boots is a 2005 Golden Globe Award-nominated British comedy film about a traditional Northampton shoemaker, based in Earls Barton, who turns to producing fetish footwear in order to save the ailing family business and the jobs of his workers.
The film is based on the story of Divine, which was featured in an episode of the BBC documentary series Trouble at the Top.
It features Charlie Price, who is trying to save the family business and travels to London to get ideas.
In a fluke encounter he meets sassy
drag queen performer Lola, the alter ego of Simon, and sees the possible market of shoes for male transvestites. With the styling eye of Lola, Charlie leads the traditional shoe factory to design and produce numerous shoes
for the catwalk in
Milan, Italy.

1.

What specific aspects of pop culture could be seen in the movie?

During watch this movie, I found that main point and plot are related to boots. It can also related to fashion for female. The boots that appear on this movie is not for only women, it can be for man like Lola. Lola is a man who enjoys putting on female dress. For Lola (main actor), dress up and heel are very important because he can feel being a woman by wearing female dress, make up, and wearing heel. Especially, Lola enjoys wearing kinky boots when he performance in the live band club for gay. I can find the aspects of pop culture in this movie. That is boots for girl. So I researched on boots on the internet: Boots are a common female fashion these days, so kinky boots are boots with extreme characteristics which are intended to present a dramatic sexy appearance, such as by a prostitute or dominatrix. Extreme characteristics might include very high heels, thigh- or crotch-high length, or unusual colors or materials. They can be related to boot fetishism, a kind of shoe fetishism which thus makes them a form of fetish clothing. The term is ambiguous, since what can be considered kinky by some can be seen as elegant fashion by others.

              2.       Which aspect of movie could potentially be unpopular to the general public?

For me, unpopular aspect in this movie is about gay. In that movie, it shows about cognition to gay likes Don who has a prejudiceabout gay. Especially, gays in the club indicate transvestite, wearing opposite sex’s clothes. Usually man thinks that man is superior to woman. But there is also man who wants to become a woman. So this existing state that the increase number of gay seems to be unpopular to general public.

            3. Do you think the movie has the makings of a classic?

For me, this movie has the makings of a classic. Because this movie dealing with gender likes Lola who wants to be a woman so he putting make up to be shown like a girl even wearing boots, cloth for girl. For Lola, the fashion is very important. Because we can recognize who they are by seeing cloth that someone wear. That’s why Lola eager in wearing cloth and boots for girl. We can make a good example of this society about gay from this movie. Our society tends to choice only one something like dichotomy. The scene about Lora and Don’s arm wrestling shows that it tends to prejudiced view about gay likes Lola. But this movie has a moral lesson. Even though the genre of this movie is comedy, we can get a lesson about gender and understanding each other.

“Papa Don't Preach” cover

"Papa Don't Preach"

Papa I know you're going to be upset
'Cause I was always your little girl
But you should know by now
I'm not a baby

You always taught me right from wrong
I need your help, daddy please be strong
I may be young at heart
But I know what I'm saying

The one you warned me all about
The one you said I could do without
We're in an awful mess, and I don't mean maybe - please

[Chorus:]

Papa don't preach, I'm in trouble deep
Papa don't preach, I've been losing sleep
But I made up my mind, I'm keeping my baby, oh
I'm gonna keep my baby, mmm...

He says that he's going to marry me
We can raise a little family
Maybe we'll be all right
It's a sacrifice

But my friends keep telling me to give it up
Saying I'm too young, I ought to live it up
What I need right now is some good advice, please

[chorus]

Daddy, daddy if you could only see
Just how good he's been treating me
You'd give us your blessing right now
'Cause we are in love, we are in love, so please

[chorus]

Papa don't preach, I'm in trouble deep
Papa don't preach, I've been losing sleep
[repeat]

Oh, I'm gonna keep my baby, ooh
Don't you stop loving me daddy
I know, I'm keeping my baby

 * About the " Papa don't preach"

"Papa Don't Preach" is the second single by American singer-songwriter Madonna from her 3rd studio album True Blue and was released on June 11, 1986 by Sire Records. It was an international #1 hit and caused huge controversy with its music video depicting a pregnant young teenage mother. The song later appeared remixed on the 1990 compilation album The Immaculate Collection.

Papa Don't Preach" is a song by Madonna andthe second single from her third studio album True Blue (1986). It was released in summer 1986 and reached number one in the United States, Australia and the UK, where it was the eighth biggest seller of the year. The song was written by Brian Elliot with additional lyrics by Madonna.

   * Controversy

"Papa Don't Preach" is sung from the perspective of a teenage girl who admits to her father (played by Danny Aiello in the music video) that not only is she pregnant, but she plans to keep and raise the child. Typically for Madonna, the single caused some controversy because of its somewhat taboo subject matter. It was criticized by parents, conservative religious groups, and women's organizations because it seemed to glorify teenage pregnancy.Madonna has always flatly denied these criticisms, stating that the song aims to illustrate the real-life experience of young girls who fall in love. Her friend and actress Debi Mazar plays one of Madonna's friends in the video. Debi Mazar has also been seen in Madonna's videos for Europe's True Blue, Deeper and Deeper, and Music. The actor Alex McArthur plays the role of her boyfriend.

The song also earned Madonna her first praise from former critics from across the political spectrum. Tipper Gore, who just a year earlier had denounced Madonna and her single "Dress You Up" as "vulgar" and had led a campaign against vulgar music, commended Madonna for speaking candidly about such a relevant and important social issue. Conservatives also supported Madonna's message that she was choosing to keep her unborn child rather than undergoing an abortion.

Despite, or perhaps because of the controversy surrounding the song, it was a huge success that topped the singles charts in several countries including the United States of America.

You Raise Me Up

When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary
When troubles come and my heart burdened be
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up: To more than I can be
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up: To more than I can be

There is no life - no life without its hunger
Each restless heart beats so imperfectly
But when you come and I am filled with wonder
Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up: To more than I can be

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up: To more than I can be
You raise me up: To more than I can be

* my comment :

This song is one of my favorite songs.
The word of this song makes me feel so easy.
When I feel so weak and exhausted, I can get a power and look forward to my GOD and think about my faith by listening.
Especially, after I come here in Philippines, I often feel loneliness even though I already make lots of Filipino friends and have been very busy on my studies. Because it was my first time to be away from my family and hometown, so I try to lead a religious life and start my day with having meditation and pray for God.
This is the reason why I love this song!!

You’re the Voice

John Farham

We have the chance to
turn the pages over
We can write what we wanna write
We gotta make ends meet
before we get much older
We're all someone's daughter
We're all someone's son
How long can we look at each other
Down the barrel of a gun?

[ Chorus: ]
You're the voice, try and understand it
Make a noise and make it clear
(Oh Oh Oh Ohooooh)
(Oh Oh Oh Oh Ohooooh)

We're not gonna sit in silence
We're not gonna live with fear

This time, you know that we
all can stand together
With the power to be powerful
Believing, we can make it better
We're all someone's daughter
We're all someone's son
How long can we look at each other
Down the barrel of a gun?

[ Chorus: ]

We're all someone's daughter
We're all someone's son
How long can we look at each other
Down the barrel of a gun?

[ Chorus ]

jessica:

when i listen to this song, i can feel a sorrowful atmosphere.
at the same time, i can also feel that they want to change the time in which they are living and do something about it.
i think they want another world that  is more peaceful and is a better palce to live in.
they seemed to overcome their sufferings/hardships.
what's important is that they want to do it  'together' that's why they mentioned about 'daughters' and 'sons' in the lyics.

kathleen:

the persona calls the attention of the listener/reader/s and tells the listener/reader/s that he/she/they can change something or can make a difference if they just make a noise and stand for what they believe in.

“we” could either be inclusive or exclusive of the listeners. “we” could refer to the persona and other people he/she has in mind and not necessarily to the direct listener of the song.

the mention of “gun” would bring into mind a scene of war or violence, of people shooting each other or physically hurting each other. but it could also mean hatred among people, oppression, or inequality of rights.

the persona encourages the people he is addressing to to change history (turn the pages over..write what we want to write). he tells them not to be fearful and silent but to understand that through their voices they can make some noise and therefore change the course of history.

We're all someone's daughter
We're all someone's son ---
these words call for unity/ oneness of mind to attain peace.

How long can we look at each other
Down the barrel of a gun? ---
this question doesn't really call for an answer but the persona is saying that war/violence/conflict/oppression should be stopped.
